THE MOZE-BERTHON VINEYARDS

The Moze-Berthon vineyards have been in the family since 1820 and today Patrick Moze-Berthon manages the Montagne and Pomerol estates and is accompanied by his oldest son Mickael, who himself represents the 7th Generation of family winemakers.


The Moze-Berthon family inherits its first property, the Chateau Gouprie in Pomerol in the "Maillet" locality. This estate is composed of 10 acres has a "terroir" of gravel and clay. The vineyard has a typical Pomerol planting of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.


Besides this property M. Georges Moze-Berthon ( 1797-1861 ) also inherits from the Château Vieux Chantecaille consisted of 1 hectare 26 on the appellation Saint-Emilion on a sandy soil divided in 80 % of Merlot and 20 % of Cabernet Franc. Thanks to the rigor and the requirement of Patrick this property has receipt the AOC Saint-Emilion Grand Cru in 2008.


In 1880, a Montagne St Emilion property called Chateau Rocher Gardat was added to the family group of vineyards. Made up of 18 acres, this vineyard is imbedded in old quarries. For over 300 years, a part of the quarrie tunnels have been used as temperature controlled storage area for the oldest vintages of the chateaux. One may actually find old, prestigious vintages that date back for more than 100 years. The terroir is of clay and limestone and are made up of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grape varieties.


The vineyard work is carried on in the same qualitative way for each of the three vineyards. Patrick and Mickael continu to use traditional methods such as de-leafing, thining and handpicked. In the winery, the wine is aged in french oak barrels renewed by one third new per year.
